Let's Get Comfy With Voting
Project Type
Interdisciplinary Voting Intervention Design
Date
January 2024 - May 2024
Let's Get Comfy With Voting is a design solution created during a semester long project tackling the problem of voting rates of engineering students at the University of Maryland being 10 percentage points lower than the overall student average. Our challenge was creating a spatial structure with an engaging exhibit/display content that draws in passing students, delivers messaging and creates a sense of shared civic space. The design goals were to create a space that felt welcoming, unintimidating, safe and comfortable and had a joyful, delightful quality, to lighten the burdens associated with civic participation. For this project, I worked in an interdisciplinary team, consisting of myself and three architects to design a voting intervention for the A. James Clark School of Engineering Building located on the University of Maryland Campus. Our team created a voting intervention that establishes an association between voting and self-expression, makes voting visible on campus, gradually introduces students to voting related content and makes students feel comfortable with the act of voting through a fun and low stakes voting simulation activity and thoughtfully crafted voting content and spatial structures.
